How many times have you ticked "clean the mirrors" off your list of domestic chores, only to spot a streak, then another and another?

Achieving a spotless finish isn't easy and it usually depends on your choice of cleaning solution and cloth, as well as your favored scrubbing pattern.

If you tend to just run a damp towel over the surface and shrug your shoulders, don't worry. Social media is packed with tips and how-to videos—part of a trend where influencers play a growing role in how we clean our homes, according to University of London sociologist Stephanie Alice Baker.

"These influencers share much in common with the self-improvement movement, which emerged in the 19th century with writers such as Samuel Smiles and Catharine Beecher, and proliferated in the mid to late 20th century with the mass media and the industry of self-help," Baker told Newsweek.

Here, we ask three of those cleaning influencers how to clean a mirror without streaks.

Becky Rapinchuk, who runs the Clean Mama Instagram page, believes the best tool is "a microfiber cleaning cloth."

She told Newsweek: "The way to ensure that you don't get streaks is to spray your cleaning spray directly on the cleaning cloth and not on your mirror. Wipe in a back and forth, left to right, pattern until you have covered the entire mirror. Stand back and look at that reflection."

You don't necessarily need an expensive cleaning solution either. Rapinchuck has her own recipe:

Pour these ingredients into a spray bottle, shake and spray on the microfiber cloth, she said.

Katie Ferguson, who posts on Instagram as Mrs F's Cleaning and Tips, suggests tackling limescale first for mirrors and other glass surfaces.

"I use Pink Stuff bathroom foam cleaner and spray onto the screen, then use a bathroom sponge scourer and scrub. Wet the sponge scourer to rinse off the remaining foam cleaner, then use a window cloth to buff. It will be sparkling," she told Newsweek.

This technique gets rid of dirt, soap and grease as well as removing and preventing limescale, she added.

Lynsey Crombie, better known as the Queen of Clean, offers her housework tips via books, TV appearances and social media. Like Rapinchuk, she suggests expensive products are not always needed to clean your mirrors.

"Most shop-bought glass cleaners are great, but the biggest mistake is using too much product. You only need one squirt of product," she told Newsweek. She recommends using a microfiber cloth and working in an S-shape motion to prevent the streaks. "You can also use a homemade cleaner," she said.
